A 720 square foot multi-tier western red cedar deck on a lakefront property in Eastlake had endured eight years of Lake Ontario humidity without professional restoration. Surface mould colonization, severe grey UV oxidation, and salt-mineral deposits along the lake-facing edge required a complete restoration protocol — not a simple recoat. The deck featured 18 spindles across two railing runs, two staircases (one with six treads to grade, one with three treads to a lower entertaining tier), and exposed end-grain cuts on every joist visible from the yard.
Project Overview
Restore the deck to as-new appearance while extending its service life by another six to ten years before the next major intervention. The homeowner specifically wanted to preserve the cedar grain visibility — no solid stain, no paint, no finish that would mask the wood character. A marine-grade product specification was required given the lakefront exposure, and we needed to address the salt deposition along the lake-facing edge that had caused premature failure of the previous DIY stain attempt.

Project Goals and Objectives:
The restored deck needed to handle frequent summer entertaining, including patio furniture, a six-burner gas grill, and regular barefoot foot traffic from the pool. We addressed all splinter-prone areas with targeted sanding, replaced four boards showing rot at the lake-facing fascia, and ensured all spindle-to-rail joints were tight and free of moisture pockets that had been hidden under the failed previous finish.
