How We Restore a Log Home

Specialty log home work including media blasting to bare wood, chinking and caulking repair, and multi-coat penetrating stain application.

  1. 01

    Whole-home assessment

We document existing finish, identify failed chinking, locate any rot or insect damage, and confirm the appropriate restoration approach (media blasting versus less aggressive prep).

  2. 02

    Media blasting to bare wood

Failed stain layers are removed with controlled media blasting using corn cob or glass bead — gentle on the underlying wood while removing finish, mould, and surface degradation. Few Ontario contractors are certified for this work.

  3. 03

    Borate preservative treatment

Bare wood receives a borate preservative treatment that protects against insects and fungal decay before any topcoat is applied.

  4. 04

    Chinking and caulking repair

Failed chinking is removed and replaced with modern flexible chinking that moves with seasonal log expansion. Caulking around windows, doors, and notches is renewed as needed.

  5. 05

    Multi-coat stain and topcoat

A log-home-specific penetrating stain is applied in multiple coats with a clear UV topcoat on south and west walls. Application is timed around weather windows for optimal cure.

  6. 06

    Annual inspection plan

Log homes benefit from annual maintenance inspections. We document the finished work and provide a calendar for caulking and stain checks.

  • Random orbital sanders
  • Spray equipment

Materials

3-year written warranty on workmanship

If the finish peels, flakes, or fails prematurely due to a workmanship or application defect, we will return and re-coat the affected area at no charge.

Covered

  • Premature peeling, flaking, or cracking of the applied finish
  • Adhesion failure attributable to surface preparation
  • Stain product defects covered by the manufacturer warranty (we coordinate the manufacturer claim)
  • Visible application defects — drips, lap marks, missed sections — flagged within 30 days

Not covered

  • Acts of God: storm damage, flooding, hail, fallen trees
  • Damage from heavy or improper use: dragged furniture, BBQ grease, ice melt salt, planter rust
  • Structural wood damage existing at the time of service that was disclosed in the quote
  • Normal wear in high-traffic walkways and stair treads
  • Damage to surfaces customer modified, painted over, or maintained against our written care plan
  • Cosmetic colour change from natural UV fade — within stain category, fade is expected and not a defect
  • Any work performed by a different contractor on the same surface during the warranty period

How to make a claim: Email or call within the warranty period with photos and a brief description. We schedule an on-site inspection within 5 business days. Confirmed warranty issues are scheduled for re-coat within 30 days, weather permitting.

Products we use

For all stain and refinishing work, we apply Expert Stain & Seal contractor-grade penetrating oil-based stains — formulated for the freeze-thaw and humidity conditions in the Greater Toronto Area. Expert Stain & Seal penetrates deeply into cedar and pressure-treated lumber rather than forming a film on top, so the finish renews with cleaning and recoating instead of requiring full stripping. For surface preparation we use commercial-grade percarbonate cleaners and oxalic-acid wood brighteners; for hardwood floor work we use commercial-grade polyurethane in oil-based or water-based formulations matched to your floor.

Took our 15 yr old front deck & made it look brand new again! Quick, efficient & when done cleaned up all supplies like they had never even been here! Definitely recommended & for sure will use this company again when its time to redo it!

Had an issue with my fence and deck. Another company told me I would have to replace it and it was beyond saving. So glad I got a second opinion. The guys at beaver wood saved both and it looks amazing. Company was very professional did what they said they would do and finished a full day before the deadline. Great company highly recommend them to all my family and friends. Before the problem gets bad reach out to the guys and they can save you a lot of trouble and money. That was surely the case with me.

Log Home Restoration — Questions Toronto Homeowners Ask

Media blasting is a controlled abrasive process using corn cob, glass bead, or a similar soft media to strip failed stain, mould, and surface degradation from log walls without damaging the underlying wood. It is the standard restoration approach when a log home has multiple failed finish layers, deep mould penetration, or extensive UV damage that hand-sanding cannot address efficiently. Few Ontario contractors are certified for this work.

Properly stained log walls typically need recoating every 3 to 7 years depending on exposure. South and west walls fail first and may need touch-up between full applications. Annual inspection of caulking, chinking, and finish condition is the single most important maintenance step for log home longevity.

Yes. Chinking failure is one of the most common problems on log homes 10 years old and up — UV breaks down most chinking compounds within a decade. We remove failed material, prep the substrate, and apply modern flexible chinking that moves with seasonal log shrinkage and expansion. This is typically combined with a stain refresh.
